People have asked “who is John Karagiannis?” Our shop is named after a romantic young man and his love for a beautiful girl. Two photographs hung behind a small bar in one of the Aegean Islands. One was of a young handsome fisherman and the other a beautiful girl standing in the sunshine wearing a long fur coat. They were remarked on by a Naval Officer during the Second World War. His ship was at anchor in the bay and he had a few hours of shore leave.
He was told that the fisherman was a local man John Karagiannis. The story goes that he fell in love with the girl but her parents would not permit the liaison believing that she could do better than a fisherman. The young man determined to better his prospects and left the Island for the prosperous fishing grounds off Newfoundland. The work was hard and very cold and after a full season John moved ashore, but rather than migrating south for warmer climes, he appears to have taken up fur trapping. The fur coat in the picture was a gift that he had shipped back to his girl with the promise that he would be home with his fortune soon. That was the last that anyone heard from him. One hundred years on we named our shop after him – a man who moved into the fur trade for the love of a good woman.
